With its main base located in Port Elizabeth, RELAY EMS opened a branch in Uitenhage in response to a need for a quality service in the area. The local Cuyler Hospital is extremely busy and needed an ambulance service that was closer to the action.

Richard Moodie of RELAY EMS says:

"We will have Basic- and Intermediate Life Support crews in Uitenhage 24/7 and, when required, an Advanced Life Support Paramedic. A founding principle of RELAY EMS is that we will never cut corners when it comes to patient safety and Uitenhage meets this promise admirably."

Meanwhile, RELAY EMS, that has been operating since August, sticks to its principle of never compromising when it comes to having the right equipment available, was clearly evident when three premature babies needed to be transferred from a state facility to a private ICU.

ALS Paramedic Bradley Osner says: "We had a prem baby transfer one day and a short while later had to help prem twins. RELAY EMS is one of only two ambulance services in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan with an ICU incubator, which is what these babies needed. It's not just about the incubator, it's about the life support systems and ventilators that go along with this type of inter-hospital transfers."
